Skimming Images From yFrog/TwitPic Tweets

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

Had a client request for Wiffiti that I’m surprised we hadn’t seen previously (at least not that I know of). Instead of just pulling in Flickr images, the client wanted to automatically display images posted to yFrog and TwitPic from relevant tweets.

Extremely simple solution that took me a bit to track down, simply because there were no explicit use cases coming up in my searches:

Pulling Images From TwitPic Related Tweets [via Nerdery]:

Notes From The 7:20 Outbound

Monday, July 27th, 2009

Some notes for this cloudy Monday morning:

- Launched Stride on MTVTimesSquare last week. Send your message/photo to MTV’s 42ft screen (Broadway btwn 44th and 45th). Then get a ‘memento’ screenshot of what it [probably] looked like. Legalese and logistics have forced this one to be kept under wraps for a while now. Hopefully we have the opportunity to improve the whole concept as it runs.

- Posting and processing my latest shots to my Flickr account last week reminded me how much I miss taking daily photographs. Doubt I will get back to that frequency, but need to make sure I keep the camera with me more often.

- Have moved to XCode for my Arduino development. Struggling significantly with decoding IR messages from the Apple Remote. Speaking of homebrew-geekiness, congrats to Mr. Saunders for some great recent work.

- Wedding planning is flying, thanks to my wonderful partner in crime. Have some initial pages posted to sg.weds.gs. Starting to think about the registry now. Extremely conflicted on this part. More on that in the future.

- Finally, I leave you with a relevant shot, taken this weekend. Sixty-three years of marriage. And counting. Too bad I’m marrying into this family; I could certainly use some of those genes.

A Letter To My WordPress Installation(s)

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

Dear WordPress,

Remember that time I spent days getting you just right? Remember how I tweaked every little pixel, molded your PHP, your CSS, your JavaScript? I gave you my heart. And you’ve completely thrown it on the floor and stomped on it.

Ok, I realize I may have stopped updating you for a bit. Maybe I should have paid more attention to you, and less attention to my new job, or my new fiancée. Maybe I should have traveled less. But that’s all behind us now. I am looking at the future.

Or am I? How can I consider a future with you, my dear blogging software, when you keep screwing me over here. First your iPhone app loses posts randomly, removes UI elements when it feels like it, and ultimately breaks. That was hard to take. I wrote out a nice long rant about it. But I hit delete. Why? Because I felt it wasn’t worth the anger. It was time to move past it.

But now – now I must speak up. You ask me to update you to 2.8. Easy! I click a button, I wait a few minutes. Just like that, you’re as good as new. But perhaps you’re TOO new! Where is the overly-muted black and white theme? Where is the skinnier-than-necessary Chalet Nineteen Sixty typeface (implemented via sIFR)? I spend all this time morphing you in to what I want in a blog, and you go off and do your own thing.

Of course, there’s nothing I can do but go back to the beginning now. Pick up the pieces. I won’t be switching to MoveableType or Tumblr or the like. They may be better. But I will never know. I’ve commited myself to this relationship. My only request is that, this time – please – get your shit straight and behave.

Because I love you. I do. But only when you do what I say.

Lovingly yours,

Gabi.

DOOH Screen Connecting Mobile/Web/Event Based Media

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009

I realize it’s been about five years since I’ve posted, but there are plenty of good reasons. I will elaborate on others soon, but for now, here’s a quick piece on an app I worked on. It’s a digital out of home execution built to keep 5000 Tweens occupied while they wait for the Demi Lovato/David Archeletta show to start. Feel free to look up who those artists are…I had to.

Users can send SMS/email messages to a screen then go to a site and see a ‘replay’ of their messages from the show.

It’s a small part of LocaModa’s strategy to be the only company that connects dooh with web, mobile, social networks, and – coming soon – more traditional media like TV.

More soon…oh, and I admit I already knew who David Archeletta was.
